The Barnes Foundation is a world-renowned cultural site threatened with destruction. How?
A consortium of foundations, commercial, and political interests is attempting to remove the famed Barnes art collection from its home in Merion, Pennsylvania for installation in a replica in Philadelphia, only five miles away.

That plan would dismantle this unique cultural site that is eligible for National Historic Landmark status.  Instead, Governor Rendell, the Pew Trusts, and the Annenberg and Lenfest Foundations want to turn the extraordinary Barnes experience into a PORK BARREL PROJECT.

We all want a healthy, vibrant future for the Philadelphia region, but destruction of a neighboring cultural treasure, causing colossal waste of resources, including tax funds, is NOT the way.

The Barnes Move Project: a poster child for incomprehensible PORK BARREL SPENDING!

PENNSYLVANIA TAXPAYERS: $107,000,000 of your hard-earned tax dollars is slated to destroy the Barnes Foundation (S.B. 1213, 2002)  That’s on top of more than $80,000,000 pledged earlier by Governor Rendell to disable opposition to this destructive plan.
(See Murky details: Rendell, The Barnes, Lincoln University, and others).

We call upon public officials and leaders of the philanthropic community to recognize that the Barnes move is fiscally irresponsible and imperils the very existence not only of the Barnes Foundation, but of other cultural institutions in the region.

“If there were other places like the Barnes, dispensing with it would not be tragic.  But one minus one is zero."
